Missing nun’s body found in sewer after suspected drowning! In a tragic incident, a trainee Catholic nun who went missing from the Rongo Catholic Church on Thursday, October 24, was found dead in a sewer pit within the sister convent in Rongo Parish.
The deceased, identified as 23-year-old Yvonne Jirangwa, was discovered by a fellow nun who was on her way to the farm. The discovery has led to an investigation by police, who are exploring both murder and accidental drowning as possible causes of her death.
Missing Nun Found in Sister Convent Sewer
According to Homa Bay Diocese Vicar General Gabriel Atieno, the nuns at the Rongo Catholic Church reported Jirangwa’s disappearance to the Rongo Police Station after she was last seen on October 24. Despite extensive search efforts, they were unable to locate her that day.
Her body was ultimately discovered three days later, on Sunday, October 27, floating in a sewer pit on church grounds.
“Atieno explained that efforts to trace her the whole day turned futile, prompting the sisters to contact law enforcement. It was during a routine farm visit by one of the nuns that the body was found inside the sewer,” he said.
Investigation Launched Into Mysterious Death
Rongo Sub-county Police Commander Salim Fundi confirmed that authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Jirangwa’s death, which has shocked the church community. According to Fundi, police began tracing her movements after her disappearance was reported, but her whereabouts remained unknown until the gruesome discovery in the sewer.
One nun, while on her way to the farm, noticed the body floating and immediately raised an alarm. The body has since been moved to Rosewood Hospital Mortuary, where it will undergo an autopsy as part of the investigation. The police are currently seeking to establish what may have happened in the hours leading up to Jirangwa’s death and are not ruling out the possibility of foul play.
Community Shocked by Trainee Nun’s Death
The death of Yvonne Jirangwa, who had been a trainee at the Rongo Parish for three years, has left the local community and her fellow nuns in shock. Fellow church members and parishioners are grappling with the news and questioning the circumstances surrounding her death.
Authorities have not yet determined whether Jirangwa’s death was the result of an accident, such as an accidental fall leading to drowning, or if there was foul play involved. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to provide answers to the church community and Jirangwa’s family.

In an unrelated incident, a 50-year-old man in Mukonyo village, Kirinyaga County, met a tragic end after slipping into a 75-foot well early Monday morning. According to police and family members, the man fell into the well around 2 a.m. after he and his cousin left a bar.
Man Slips Into Well While Searching for Goat
The deceased had reportedly gone out in search of his missing goat, which he learned had been found dead. Wanting to see the animal, he and his cousin headed to the site. The tragic incident occurred when the man accidentally slipped into the well as his cousin stepped away briefly to retrieve a flashlight to illuminate the area.
“After I took my torch and could not see him, I only heard him crying for help in my 75-foot well, which I had covered with rotten woods,” said the surviving cousin.
Emergency Services Retrieve Body From Well
Local authorities were alerted, and a fire engine was called to the scene to assist in recovering the body. Emergency responders successfully retrieved the body, which was then taken to a nearby mortuary as investigations continue.
The deaths of both Jirangwa in Rongo Parish and the man in Mukonyo village have drawn attention to safety concerns in various environments, from religious compounds to rural properties. As investigations proceed, both communities are mourning the losses and seeking answers.
