A nurse was found dead after he was fatally shot in an attack in a village in Lodwar, Turkana County.

Police said the incident happened on Saturday night between Loiya and Lorengippi.

The lifeless body of Johnson Aparinga, 35, and a nurse at Loiya Health Center was found lying beside the road with blood oozing from his head, mouth, and back.

Police said he had gunshot wounds then and his motorcycle was lying next to the body.

The motive of the attack is yet to be known so far, police said.

The gunmen behind the attack had escaped the scene. Police said the body was moved to the Lodwar morgue awaiting autopsy and other procedures.

Locals said the nurse has been a reliable officer.

The area has been facing such gun attacks some of which are linked to retaliations out of cattle rustling.

Authorities said they are engaging village elders as they investigate the attack to solve it amicably.

But police said there will be justice in the matter and vowed to arrest the attackers.

To address the menace of illegal guns in the area, the government has been staging disarmament exercises in the area.

The government has also rolled out a number of development projects to enable locals focus on them and abandon the crime of cattle rustling.

The police said they have intensified patrols in the area to address fears of planned retaliation from the raiders.

The area is among those facing frequent attacks by rustlers, which have left many dead, injured and displaced.

This has affected development at large amid efforts to address the menace.

The area is among those under police operation to recover illegal weapons in the hands of civilians.

The operation started three months ago and involve multi-agency teams covering various counties.

Operation Komesha Uhalifu North Rift targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit and Isiolo counties.

Besides retributive reaction, strategic investment and sustainable development have also taken a prominent place among the government’s planned crime control interventions for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.
