Health Ministry urges vigilance as respiratory illnesses spike

Health Ministry urges vigilance as respiratory illnesses spike. The Ministry of Health has issued an advisory on the ongoing respiratory infections noting a surge of influenza cases.

In a statement Thursday, the ministry said it has been monitoring influenza cases and has observed cases throughout the year with an upsurge of cases in two peaks from February to March and July to November.

It however allayed fears of COVID-19 infection in the country as allegedly reported in a section of the media.

“Among the pathogens monitored are those that have a high potential to cause epidemic flu such as SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza virus, and other pathogens that are implicated in upper and lower respiratory infections. None of these sites have reported an increase in the numbers of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID 19) but increased cases of influenza have been reported” said acting Director General for Health Patrick Amoth.

“We wish to inform the public that the current increase in numbers is in line with the expected cases of influenza at this time of the year and there have been no significant changes in the number of hospitalizations and deaths reported. Influenza infections are typically self-limiting but may also result in severe disease or death, especially in people at high risk” he stated.

Dr. Amoth emphasizes the importance of precautionary measures, including avoiding close contact with sick individuals, practising respiratory and hand hygiene, wearing face masks in public spaces, and considering influenza vaccination.

Special attention is advised for vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions.

He further underscores the importance of collective efforts in combating respiratory illnesses and urged the public to remain vigilant.

Dr Amoth reassured the public that the Ministry has a robust surveillance system that monitors the emergence and spread of flu and other pathogens of national, regional, and global concern.

He further reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to addressing the current surge in respiratory illnesses and ensuring the health and safety of all Kenyans.
