Moi University cancels all academic trips after bus accident

Moi University Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey has cancelled all academic trips for students after the university’s bus was involved in a road accident on Wednesday.

In a statement dated March 27, Kosgey said that the school would resume their academic trips after the Easter holidays.

A bus ferrying Moi University students to Mombasa on a four-day field trip was involved in what the VC termed as ‘a non-fatal traffic accident’ at the Kimende area on the Nakuru – Nairobi Highway.

The VC said that there were no casualties or fatalities from the accident while urging drivers and road users to exercise caution during the Easter Holidays.

Lari subcounty deputy police commander Francis Njomo while confirming the incident, said that 12 students were rushed to Orthodox Hospital in Kimende town after they sustained injuries from the accident.

Njomo confirmed that the bus, a 67-seater, was carrying 50 students.

The bus was ferrying third-year and fourth-year students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Kiswahili.

“The driver of the bus lost control in unclear circumstances and the bus landed in a ditch,” Njomo said.

He said traffic police have launched investigations to establish what happened before the accident.

“We are investigating to establish how the driver lost control and the bus got off the road,” he said.

Moi University said that all the students had been accounted for and the university dispatched another vehicle to carry the students back to school.

“The driver swerved off-road to avoid a possible head-on collision with a trailer. The bus landed on the side of the road safely. The students were rescued immediately and all are accounted for. Police responded and another bus was dispatched to pick up the students back to Main Campus,” an incident report seen by the Star reported.

Njomo said the wreckage of the university bus was towed to the Lari police station as investigations continue.
