Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama now says that Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s bid to become the next African Union Commission chair is not about Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja.
In a statement on Sunday, Muthama said that the bid is about championing the interests of all Kenyans and Africans.
He insisted that politics should not be dragged into the matter.
“Raila’s candidacy for this AUC top job isn’t about Kenya Kwanza or Azimio La Umoja but our country and our son hence we shouldn’t drag politics into this matter,” Muthama said.
“He isn’t going to champion the interests of either Azimio La Umoja or ODM but our own interests, therefore, let us all come together and give him unwavering support.”
He added that Raila is best suited to take up the role and that Kenyans should stand as a united front in pushing for this course.
Muthama wished Raila the best as he started AUC chairmanship campaigns.
“Former Prime Minister and Azimio La Umoja boss Raila Odinga is the best fit for the African Union Commission chairmanship and as a country, we should unite for this course,” he said.
“We must always learn to live as children of one father whereby we can quarrel within but when we go outside, we don’t wash our dirty linen in public.”
The former Machakos senator also commended President William Ruto for leading the way in fronting Raila for the job.
Muthama further noted that this is the kind of leadership and statesmanship needed to unite the country.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Thursday last week made public his intentions to vie for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
His bid comes at a time when the tenure of incumbent Moussa Faki of Chad is coming to an end.
Raila insisted that he was the right candidate for the job.
“Today, I want to make it public that I am ready to go for the chairmanship of the Africa Union… I am inclined to accept the challenge. Should the leadership of Africa want my services, I am ready and offer myself to be of service to this continent,” Raila said.
For one to become an AU Commission chair, he or she must be endorsed by the mother country.
