Treasury to start releasing CDF funds for MPs

Kenya Parliament

MPs finally have their way on CDF after the Treasury agreed to release the Funds bringing to end months of stalemate.

A court ruling had outlawed the CDF Act 2013.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndungu on Thursday wrote to the Speaker informing the House he had received a green light from the Attorney General to release the monies.

Treasury will now be releasing Sh2 billion to Constituencies every week beginning Friday next week.

The CS had sought the AG’s opinion on the implication of the ruling that declared CDF unconstitutional.

In his legal opinion to the Treasury, Attorney General Justin Muturi said the NG CDF technically remains in force until a contrary direction is made by a superior court.

The ruling, he noted, does not affect the NG-CDF Act 2015 under which the Fund currently operates.

“Treasury confirms it will commence disbursement from Sh2 billion every week starting December 9,” National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said in his communication to the House on Thursday afternoon.
