Why are citizens quiet with how govt is handling COVID-19

Former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng says he does not understand why South Africans are quiet about the way COVID-19 is being handled by government. He was speaking at a conference on the impact of COVID-19 related corruption on human rights.

This against the backdrop of procurement irregularities and apparent abuse of state resources, during efforts to lessen the impact of the pandemic in the country.

The former Chief Justice made headlines last year when he referred to the vaccinations as the devil’s vaccine, while addressing a government event in Tembisa in the East Rand. According to Mogoeng, a state of disaster can only last for 21 days and cannot be extended by more than three months.

“COVID-19 does seem to fall under the natural disaster in section 37(1) of the Constitution. Why have we allowed a structure that is neither constitutional nor statutory. A command council, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, [Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma] and the President [Cyril Ramaphosa] to interfere with our entrenched fundamental rights in this manner and to extend lockdown as easily as they do,” adds Mogoeng.
In 2020, Mogoeng said it’s an embarrassment that corruption by government officials has been rife during the coronavirus pandemic.

He said now it was the time for South Africans to find solutions to numerous allegations of corruption in government. Justice Mogoeng was delivered the keynote address at Tembisa Hospital during a thanksgiving ceremony.
