Government ready to start land reform programme: David Mabuza

Deputy President David Mabuza says the government is ready to start its land reform programme, including expropriation of land without compensation. Mabuza emphasises that all land redistribution will take place within the confines of the law. It was the first time the deputy president has fielded questions in the National Council of Provinces in the sixth democratic Parliament.

Among the questions, the contentious land issue. Mabuza says 278 pieces of state land have been identified for redistribution.

Some of them are here in the Western Cape, where we want to settle people, the new minister of public works has moved quickly to release parcels of land,” Mabuza said.

Mabuza says government wants agricultural land to be productive and will assist young emerging farmers, including women, every step of the way. I want to say to our farmers, commercial farmers, white farmers, there is no need to panic,” Mabuza said. We are going to keep you here. We need your skills but let’s remember that some people were dispossessed, let’s make right what was made wrong.” Mabuza says government is open to accepting donations of land from farmers.
