Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.
In a statement on X, Nobel Peace Centre said Nihon Hidankyo had been awarded for its relentless efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
The grassroots movement, composed of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki—known as Hibakusha—has been recognized for its advocacy and powerful witness testimony, demonstrating the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare.
The Nobel Peace Center praised Nihon Hidankyo for its unwavering commitment to ensuring that nuclear weapons are never used again.
“This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again,” the committee stated.
Founded in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo has long advocated for the abolition of nuclear arms, drawing from the personal experiences of survivors who witnessed the devastating impact of the atomic bombings during World War II.
Their testimonies have served as a harrowing reminder of the human cost of nuclear conflict, amplifying global calls for disarmament.
The organization’s award is seen as a recognition of decades of perseverance by the Hibakusha, whose stories of suffering have shaped the global peace movement.
