Majority of Kenyans opposed to the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said he is being attacked unfairly, a new poll shows.

The poll by Tifa Research said 36 per cent of those opposed to the DP’s ouster said an unfair attack was their main reason for rejecting his removal.

“A wide range of reasons were given by those opposing the DP’s impeachment, though few directly addressed the many charges laid against him in the National Assembly’s impeachment motion,” the findings of the poll, which was released on Monday said.

The survey said 18 per cent of those opposed to the ouster said the DP’s leadership style and performance have been good.

“.. the third most frequent reason – that both the DP and the President should be allowed to finish their current term (15 per cent),” the survey added.

Data was collected on October 1 to 4 2024 with a sample size of 1892 that was distributed across the counties proportionate to the population size.

There was a +/-2.25% margin of error with the interviews conducted via telephone.

The survey said seven per cent of those opposed to the impeachment said both Gachagua and President William Ruto should leave office.

It added that six per cent said he should be given a second chance while four per cent have said no clear reason has been given for his impeachment with another four percent stating that his removal will cause national instability.

Another four per cent opposed the impeachment arguing he has the Mt Kenya support while three per cent said it is a side-show distracting attention from key national matters.

One per cent said it would not make any difference in the country and two per cent were not sure.
