The Kenya Urban Roads Authority has begun construction of the Sh3.5 billion Ngong Road – Naivasha Road flyover.
According to the authority, the project will be located around the Junction Mall area and is fully funded by a concessional loan of Sh3.58 billion from the Spanish of Spain Corporate International Fund (FIEM).
It is expected to be completed by July 2027.
KURA said Flyover will help enhance the efficiency of Ngong Road through grade separation, to address the persistent traffic congestion.
“The new Ngong Road/Naivasha Road Flyover will bring a range of benefits to Nairobi residents, starting with a significant reduction in traffic congestion,” KURA director general Silas Kinoti said.
“By eliminating bottlenecks at key junctions, the flyover will greatly cut down travel time for motorists, public transport users, and pedestrians alike.”
Some of the enhancements that will be included in the project include Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) facilities to ensure secure travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
It will also have modern street lighting installed to improve visibility on the road.
KURA added that it will also have upgraded drainage systems to help mitigate frequent flooding risks during the rainy seasons.
“The landscaping around the project will not only add beauty to the city but also improve the overall urban environment,” KURA said.
KURA has urged motorists to drive cautiously on Ngong Road and follow directions by traffic marshals as they approach this section.
The authority further noted that it is working on efforts to decongest the city through several interventions including the expansion of existing roads, the introduction of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in major junctions and installations of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) infrastructure.
Last week, KURA announced plans to set up a Sh7.3 billion Nairobi Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Line 5 along Outer Ring Road.
The project will be ready in the next two years, as part of the government’s concerted efforts to modernize the country’s urban transportation network.
“Once implemented, the project will provide an efficient, environmentally friendly and affordable mode of transport for Eastland’s residents commuting from Taj Mall all the way to Allsops connecting Thika Road,” the DG said.
