Mt Kenya leaders rally behind Rigathi Gachagua, slam impeachment claims

RIgathi Gachagua

In a show of solidarity, a section of Mt Kenya leaders have moved to defend Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua even as reports of an impeachment plot intensify.

The leaders have stressed the importance of unity and stability within the government even as they vowed to counter any plan to eject the DP out of office.

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba said they will not allow the DP to be victimized and harassed.

She accused the proponents of the impeachment plan of seeking to divert the attention of Kenya from more pressing issues.

“They are just looking for a reason to divert attention from the ongoing protests that are happening in Kenya so that they can fix individuals,” she said.

“We are waiting for those raising issues to impeach the Deputy resident, we will not allow anybody to victimize others because of defending and representing their community.”

Nominated MP Sabina Chege has also expressed her support for DP Gachagua saying she firmly stands by his side.

Sabina Chege said it is still quite early to raise impeachment claims against Ruto’s second in command, adding that should Ruto have any issues with his deputy, he should come out and address the issues with Kenyans.

“The priorities are upside down for this government. Why would you think of impeachment instead of thinking of how to sort out Parliament and other problems that Kenyans have,” she said.

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, a close ally of Gachagua, has faulted a Kiambu MP for leading an impeachment close against the DP.

Gakuya said the MP has been leading the plot by spearheading the signature collection.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, a vocal ally of Gachagua, on his part, dared those behind the impeachment plot saying they would be in for a rude shock.

Kahiga termed as unfortunate any plans to remove the DP from office.

The county boss said efforts by some leaders to bring an impeachment motion against the DP will not see the light of day stating that the accusations against Gachagua are frivolous.

“Whoever feels that is the way to go, we tell them to bring it on and we will deal with it when that time comes,” he said.

“The country needs to be settled. We have lost two years and one which is gone because of Gen Z demonstrations. We need to bring the country to calmness. We have Cabinet Secretaries who have to be looked into.”

Their intervention comes even as the DCI intensifies its probe into alleged claims of politicians funding the Gen Z protests.

On Tuesday, three top official aides of Gachagua were grilled in connection to the protests.

The grilling some political commentators view as a plan to target the DP politically.
