The Kenya Paediatric Association (KPA) has called on the government to ensure access to medical care for injured protesters, particularly children and the youth.
KPA in a statement on Wednesday expressed concern about the safety and wellbeing of children in the aftermath of nationwide protests.
The association further wants the government to implement strategies to implement strategies to protect children and adolescents.
“The reports of children in various regions across the country being exposed to violence are alarming,” KPA national chair Supa Tunje said.
“We appeal to the government and all stakeholders to provide clear instruction to security forces to avoid the use of force especially in areas where children are present, ” Tunje said.
The association expressed concern that violence can cause physical and mental harm to children, reduce their self-worth, and hinder their development.
It warned that the effects of violence against children today will be witnessed for generations to come.
“We appeal to the government to conduct thorough investigations into the incidents of violence and hold those responsible for causing harm accountable,” Tunje said.
She noted that every child has a right to life, survival, well-being, protection, and development as provided for in the Children’s Act 2022.
The Children Act, 2022 makes provision for the care and protection of children and children in conflict with the law; to make provision for, and regulate the administration of children’s services.
Tunje further said that any form of violence against children is unacceptable.
