A petition has been filed at the Milimani Law Courts seeking to compel the National Youth Council to conduct elections for council members.

Peter Agoro and Youth Advocacy Africa told Justice Bahati Mwamuye that the continued delay in conducting elections denies the youth their right to representation and participation in national development.

“The inclusion of the youth in decision-making processes is crucial for achieving the SDG’s particularly goal 4(Quality Education), Goal 8(Decent Work and Economic Growth and Gola 10 on reduced inequalities,”

They alleged that the National Youth Council and the Attorney General’s (respondents) failure to conduct elections reflects a lack of accountability and transparency.

They asked the court to compel the respondents to conduct the elections and provide a detailed schedule for the conduct of the said elections within a specific period as determined by the court.

The Judge didn’t issue the orders sought but directed the application dated July 26 together with the petition be served on the National Youth Council and the Attorney General by close of business today.

The respondents are to file their responses by July 12.

The matter will be mentioned on July 30 to confirm compliance and take a date for a hearing.
