Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has been issued with a restraining order preventing her from making defamatory comments or postings regarding her sexual harassment allegations against House Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye.
Senior Principal Magistrate Ngotho Ruguru issued the order pending the hearing and determination of the case brought by Nyegenye.
“The defendant is hereby prohibited from publishing any content accusing the plaintiff of being a sexual predator or sharing any audio or video clips depicting the plaintiff seeking sexual favors,” Magistrate Ruguru ruled.
In August 2023, Orwoba made allegations of sexual harassment on her social media pages against the Clerk and some of her colleagues in the House.
Consequently, the House Powers and Privileges Committee, chaired by Speaker Amason Kingi, suspended her for six months from attending the House plenary sessions and Committee sittings.
The suspension, which was later endorsed by the Committee of the Whole House, prevents the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party member from also visiting the precincts of Parliament sessions until February 2024.
During the suspension, Senator Orwoba will not receive her usual perks and allowances, and she will need to apologize to the House if she fails to substantiate her allegations or if the courts find her at fault.
In the defamation lawsuit, Nyegenye’s lawyers from Wamae and Allen advocates argue that the sexual allegations have tarnished their client’s reputation, portraying him as morally compromised and a sexual predator.
They further contend that the accusations depict the Clerk as someone who abuses his position to retaliate against those who reject his advances. Magistrate Ruguru is set to provide additional instructions on the case on October 11, 2023, when it is scheduled for a hearing.
