Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has said accepting GMOs is not the answer to dealing with food security.
Nyong’o said this makes the country impotent to grow its organic foods which have sustained its livelihoods for centuries in Africa.
He said it was unfortunate that the Kenya Kwanza government has decided to play Russian Roulette with the lives of Kenyans by importing GMO maize into the country against reasoned advice from scientists.
The governor said this has been compounded by unwarranted reckless statements from some politicians.
“The lives of Kenyans, our environment, and the future of this nation cannot be sacrificed at the altar of self-gain for a few,” he said.
The governor said they reject GMOs.
“It will kill our domestic seeds industry, agriculture and make us slaves for the rest of our life,” he said.
Nyong’o said food security and the provision of sustainable foods is undoubtedly the core function of a responsible government.
But this function, he said, must not compromise the responsibility of ensuring that people’s health is protected.
