More than 80 children from a primary school at Mandeni on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast have been rushed to local clinics after they were affected by teargas. It is believed they were affected when police used teargas in an effort to disperse protesting residents on Wednesday.
IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Dylan Meyrick says, “Twenty-six children have been transported to various facilities by IPSS medical rescue. Twenty-five of them are in a stable condition, one in a moderate condition. Approximately eighty children were transported privately by the local taxi association to various clinics in the area all in a stable condition.
Meanwhile, a case of public violence is being investigated by police. Earlier, a group of pupils from a secondary school embarked on a protest action in the New Ark area in Mandeni on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast.
It is alleged that during the protest, learners damaged school windows, chairs and desks. Members of the police’s public order policing unit arrived on scene and used tear gas to disperse the learners that were protesting.
Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says, “A group of pupils from a secondary school embarked on a protest action in New Ark area, where they damaged the school windows, school chairs and desk. Public order police were summoned to the scene and the gas was used to disperse the unruly protestors.
“Unfortunately the wind blew the gas to the nearby primary school were there [are] learners. Those learners were treated by paramedics after they inhaled the gas. A case of public violence is being investigated by New Ark SAPS,” adds Gwala.
