The Kenya government has declared October 10, 2020, a public holiday to be named Huduma day.
The holiday, formerly known as Moi day, was previously celebrated to honour the late Daniel Arap Moi, the former president of Kenya but remained low keyed since 2001.
This is the first time the day is being observed in the absence of the former head of state who passed on in February this year.
In a statement, Interior CS Fred Matiangi said the day will be observed through national prayers that will highlight service and volunteerism to the community.
“In line with the provisions of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110, Laws of Kenya) it is hereby confirmed that 10th October 2020 will be a public holiday named Huduma Day,” he said.
“Kenyans are encouraged to participate in the prayers and promote national unity, social justice, cohesion and sustainable development in their communities for the benefit of present and future generations” he added.
The president will lead the country in an inter-faith national prayer service on Saturday, October 10 at State House.
This will be the second national prayer in the country since the Coronavirus pandemic struck the nation on March 13, 2020.
President Uhuru Kenyatta this week announced three days of prayers beginning this Friday.
