Police investigate shooting of prominent lawyer known for fighting crime in gov’t agencies

Police in Meru County are investigating the shooting of a prominent lawyer known for filing cases against common injustices by government agencies.

This comes after protests were witnessed in Maua on Thursday morning, as lawyers abandoned their tools of trade to seek justice for one of their own following the incident. The placards were loud, telling a worrying trend in the town.

Kirimi Mbogo, a controversial lawyer, owing to the combative nature of the cases he handles, was on Wednesday evening waylaid by two men on a motorcycle as he exited his office. The unknown assailants shot him and left him for dead.

According to witnesses who spoke to Citizen Digital, the two people on a motorbike appeared to have waited for him to leave the office.

They approached him and shot at him, before taking off in a rush. The lawyers now claim this was nothing short of an execution plan.

Lawyers protest“Hata wakitupiga risasi kila siku, we shall not be cowed, we will continue to represent our clients,” said one of the lawyers.

“If the police mean well for lawyers and for the citizens of Maua and by extension the people of Kenya, they should work fast to arrest and prosecute the criminals and those who sent them,” added anther.

The angry lawyers made their case to the area police headquarters where they received assurances from police bosses.

“Give us time, we will pursue and you will definitely get the updates,” said the DCIO.

The area Police Commander echoed this saying, “We have launched investigations, whoever did this let me assure you we will get them.”

It is not the first time the lawyer is finding himself in danger, last year his client was killed and his vehicle torched after he won a land tussle case.

Just last month, a Meru court ordered the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to compensate Kirimi Mbogo a sum of Ksh.7.7 million after winning a case where he had sued the police and NTSA for illegally arresting and detaining him.
